Note: date from tombstone. I have been perplexed by the two girls named Catherine that were James Maidson galloway's daughters. It didn't make sense to me and I remembered seeing somewhere a tombstone inscription in Hampshire County, WV for two young Galloway girls. So, I found the cemetery listing in the library and made a short road trip to the cemetery. It's in Slanesville, WV (Hampshire. County) just about 30 minutes across the Virginia line near Winchester, VA. It was only about a 40 minute drive. 2 In the old Salem Church Cemetery there, I found a tombstone with the following inscription: 2 Galloway Susan V. d. 9271862. 11 yrs 6 mos 11 days. Mary E. d. 8231862. 5 yrs 10 mos 25 days. d/o Madison & Sarah. 2 That would make Susan's birthday 16-Mar-1851 and Mary's 29-Sep-1856. Some old written records that I have reviewed indicated that James Madison. (and he did go by Madison) left Snickersille in Loudoun County in early 1861. or 1862 and went to Hampshire County near Romney (Slanesville is close to. Romney) and stayed there until about 1865 when he returned to Loudoun County. The notes also referred to a daughter Catherine who died there and was. buried there. 2 I'm now convinced that two daughters actually died up there and neither were. named Catherine. I'm going to tentatively change my information to reflect. this. Robert A. Ferrebee.
