Note: Zelda Aguilar, 96. 2 HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA - Zelda Aguilar passed away at age 96 on January 29, 2014 at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home in Hartford City, Indiana. . Zelda was born in La Plata, Argentina on April 22, 1917, the daughter of Zelda and Frank Galloway, a Virginian who worked in Argentina from 1912 until retirement in 1950. Zelda grew up in two cultures because of her father's regular furloughs to the US and spoke fluent Spanish and English. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Buenos Aires and was awarded a gold medal and teaching position by the Argentine government. Zelda married Felix F. Aguilar in 1942, who was appointed Argentine consul to the US in 1947. He served as consul in New York City, Baltimore, and Chicago until recalled to Argentina in 1954. The family immigrated to the US in 1955, settling in Baltimore. Zelda worked in the shipping industry for Hobelmann International and was named Vice President in 1972. She was one of the few women to hold such a position in the industry at that time, and was admired and respected by her colleagues. She participated in a trade delegation to China representing the port of Baltimore. Zelda retired in 1990 and moved to Chadds Ford, PA to live with her daughter Teresita. She enjoyed her retirement very much, helping raise her granddaughter Katie, traveling around the US and abroad, visiting family and friends, and playing her beloved piano. Zelda was a Christian of strong faith, loved the Methodist church in La Plata where she came to Christ and Bethany Presbyterian Church in Chadds Ford where she worshipped for nearly twenty-five years. Zelda adored her family and her legacy to them is a very strong sense of family. Her beloved husband Felix passed away in 1979 and her eldest child Maria Cristina in 2012. Her brother Franklin Madison Galloway and sister Jennie Noeli Bennett also preceded her in death. . She is survived by her son Felix Aguilar, daughter Teresita Schirmer, daughter-in-law Christa Aguilar, sons-in-law Robert Schirmer and Charles Riddlespurger, five nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Zelda will be cremated and a Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 North High Street, Hartford City, Indiana is in charge of arrangements.
