Biography
Note: Daughter of Rev. Jonathan and Martha Speer Galloway, was born in Newberry County, South Carolina, Dec 8, 1842. Her early education was secured in the common schools, and later in a high school in the town of Newberry, under Prof. William Hood. Even in childhood she gave evidences of that mental alertness, diligent application, thoroughness and love of knowledge which characterized her mature years. On account of throat affection, Rev. Jonathan Galloway was forced to resign his pastorate in 1857, and soon afterwards removed to Due West, that he might avail himself of the institutions there. The subject of this sketch entered the junior class in the Due West Female College, than under the presidency of Dr. J. L. Bonner. At the age of eighteen she graduated from this institution, having won the highest distinctions and leaving behind a record of unusual excellence in all departments of study. But her education was not finished; it was only fairly begun. The foundation was laid upon which she continued to build through life a superstructure of large and fair proportions. Miss Galloway, with two other missionaries, Mr. Alexander and Mr. Giffen, got on a ship at New York on Feb. 10, 1875. Miss Galloway married Mr. Giffen on June 5, 1876. She died in Cairo, Egypt in 1881.
