Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

James Galloway was christened on 18 Aug 1847 at Prescot St Mary's. He was the second and youngest child of James and Anne Galloway. His father's occupation was recorded as attorney, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By March 30th 1851, the family were still in Eccleston, and James' father was still an attorney. They had one servant, 21-year-old Jane Makin.

By April 7th 1861, they were living in Vicarage Place, Prescot. James' father was still an attorney. They had one servant, 21-year-old Jane Makin.

James' father died on 12 Jan 1875, aged 68. He was buried on 15 Jan 1875 at Prescot St Mary's. His address was recorded as Prescot.

By April 3rd 1881, James was living in Prescot with his mother and his brother Anthony, who was now a solicitor. James was an alkali manufacturer. Anthony and James were both still single. The family had one servant, 42-year-old Catherine Renshall.

On 26 Oct 1882, James married Jessie, youngest daughter of John Ansdell of Cowley House, at St James' Church, Buxton. [1]

James' brother Anthony died on 6 Jan 1884 in Bath district, Somerset, aged 38. He was buried on 10 Jan 1884 at Prescot St Mary's, with his father. His address was recorded as Prescot.

By April 5th 1891, James had married Jessie Ansdell, and on the night of the census they were visitors in the household of Elizabeth Scott in North Meols, Lancashire. James was a merchant; they had no children with them.

James' mother died on 16 Jan 1892, aged 77. She was buried on 21 Jan 1892 at Prescot St Mary's, with her husband. Her address was recorded as Liverpool.

By March 31st 1901, James and Jessie were living in Ullet Road, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. James was a merchant ("metal &c" - perhaps metal alkali?). They had no children, and they had two servants, a cook and a housemaid.

By April 2nd 1911, they were in Llandrillo Yn Rhos, Colwyn Bay, Carnarvonshire, Wales. James was a retired chemical merchant.

James died on 17 Mar 1928 in Ormskirk district, aged 80; he was buried in Christ Church, Eccleston, on 21 Mar 1928. His address was recorded in the burial record as 5 Marlborough Road, Southport.

Jessie died on 19 Aug 1928, aged 73, and was buried on 22 Aug 1928 with James. Her address was recorded in the burial record as 20 Avondale Road, Southport.
