Mary (Galloway) Coakley is a part of US Black heritage.
Mary T. Galloway was born enslaved about 1826 in Maryland, United States.
Gabriel Coakley purchased Mary Galloway on 1 Mar 1850, from Walter W. W. Bowie, Esq. of Prince George's County, Maryland for $500 in cash and notes.[1] The bill of sale states that she previously was the slave of Mary Weems, late of Prince George's County, Maryland.[2]
She married Gabriel Coakley on 14 Aug 1850 in the District of Columbia.[3][4][5] They had eleven children,[6] all born in freedom:
The 1860 Census[7] shows her at age 24 with her husband, five children, and an other in Washington, D.C.
The 1870 Census[8] shows her at age 44 with her husband, nine children, and two others in Washington, D.C. She is keeping house.
The 1880 Census[9] shows her at age 50 with her husband and nine children at 1606 Corcoran Street N.W., Washington, D.C. She is keeping house.
The 1900 Census[6] shows her at age "about 70," widowed, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Richard Hawkins, at 2242 12th Street, Washington, D.C. This census states that she is the mother of 11 children with 9 still living.
She died on 12 March 1902 in Washington, D.C., and is buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington, District of Columbia.[10] Excerpted from her obituary:
"COAKLEY. On Wednesday, March 12, 1902, at 5:30 a.m., MARY T., beloved wife of the late Gabriel Coakley, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Sophia Hawkins, 2244 12th street northwest... (Boston, New York and Baltimore papers please copy.)" [11]
And later:
"A large crowd of friends gathered at St. Augustine church last Saturday to witness the last sad rites over the remains of Mrs. Gabriel Coakley. She was interred at Mt. Olivet Cemetery." [12]
