Biography

Thomas James Galloway was born in 1806.

He was commissioned into the British Army in 1821 and held the following ranks

• Ensign, 15th Regiment, by purchase, 6 September 1821^[1][2]
• Ensign, 33rd Regiment, from half pay with 15th Regiment, without purchase, 15 August 1822^[3]
• Lieutenant, 33rd Regiment, without purchase, 2 June 1825^[4]
• Captain, 33rd Regiment, by purchase, 27 December 1827^[5][6]
• Brevet Major, 23 November 1841
• Major, 14 June 1842^[7]
• Lieutenant Colonel, 22 December 1848
• Colonel, 28 November 1854^[8]
• Major-General, Lieutenant- Colonel and Brevet-Colonel from 70th regiment to be Major-General, 27 March 1863.^[9][10]
• Major General to be colonel of 49th Regiment, 5 December 1871^[11]
• Lieutenant-General, 49th Regiment, 7 December 1871^[12]
• transferred from 49th Regiment to be Colonel of 70th Regiment on 7 September 1874.^[13]
• General, 1 October 1877^[14]
• 70th (East Surrey) Regiment, died in 1881.^[15]

While he served in the 70th Regiment he served in the New Zealand Wars.^[16]

He married Eliza. She died while they were in New Zealand, at Otahuhu, Auckland, New Zealand on 18 August 1861.^[17]

He was awarded the Indian War medal and the New Zealand medal.^[18]

He died at the residence of his brother in law, the Reverend George Garrett at Kilmeague, Naas, Ireland in 1881.^[19]
