Samuel was born in 1690 at Bristol in the Province of Massachusetts Bay (now part of Rhode Island), the son of Samuel Gallup and Elizabeth Southworth.
He his usually said to have died by 12 February 1752, when his son William made his will, leaving property to his sisters and naming his uncle Joshua Baily as executor. If Samuel were alive, wouldn't he have been the more natural choice, or at least worth a mention in the will?
On 7 October 1751, the Boston Evening Post ran the following account that seemingly involves Samuel and not his nephew Samuel, who at 21 years old would have been young to be styled "Captain":
After such a trying experience, and not being a young man, it may not be surprising if he succumbed to illness and death within the following months.
Samuel married Mary _____ around 1716. Children:[1]
On 20 May 1720, Samuel Gallop of Bristol, cooper, and Mary his wife sold land at Bristol set off to Samuel in the division of his father's estate.[2] On 21 July 1721, Samuel Gallup of Bristol, cooper, sold to Jabez Howland a lot of land at Bristol set off to him in the settlement of the estate of his father Capt. In January 1729/30, Samuel Gallup of New London, Connecticut, mariner sold to Jabez Howland land that had been laid out to Samuel when his brother Nathaniel's estate was divided, and also land that had been conveyed to Samuel from his brother William.[4]
On 15 September 1741, Samuel Gallup of Bristol, mariner, sold his dwelling house and land at Bristol.[5]
On 8 September 1744, Samuel Gallup of Bristol, mariner, conveyed land at Bristol in a mortgage agreement, through which he would receive the land back if he pays the principal plus interest.[6]
On 1 Mary 1756, Mary Bragg, widow, and Anna Gallop, daughters of Samuel Gallop late of Bristol, decd., requested letter of administration on his estate. His daughter Abigail Gallop, a minor, also appeared and chose Joshua Baily as her guardian [and so must have been at least 14 to make the choice].[7]
