Biography

John was the son of Thomas Gallwey and Mary Mahony.

He joined the 24th Regiment of Infantry as an Ensign on 1st October 1800, he was aged 15. He progressed to Lieutenant in 1801. In 1802 he transferred to the 16th Regiment of Foot where he was promoted to Captain in 1805. He left the service in 1819 and joined the Constabulary.[1]

He was a Captain in the 16th Regiment of Foot when he married Bridget, daughter of Neptune Blood, at Athlone in County Westmeath on 19th June 1819.[1][2] They had:[1]

  1. Ellen Elizabeth, born 5th June 1820
  2. Thomas Lionel, born 20th July 1821, 26th on irishgenealgy.ie [Dominic Thomas]
  3. Neptune Daniel, born 14th March 1824
  4. William Edward, born 1st August 1825
  5. John Aylward, born 20th January 1827.

None of the others found on www.irishgenealogy.ie

In addition to the issue above he also had: Michael, seemingly b. 11 Mar 1801 by Johanna Murphy, illeg, at Killarney (church record not yet imaged: Book No 2, Page 1, Entry No 110, Record ID KY-RC-BA-294290), father John Gallwey, Killarney. Michael was dismissed as sub-constable from RIC for drunkenness 1829, see NAI Ref CSO/RP/1829/1789 which refers to "letter he received from Capt John Gallwey, Subinspector for County Cork, Ballincollig, requesting that his son, subconstable Michael Gallwey, be transferred to another station rather than dismissed, having been seen in a ‘tipsy state’ "- pretty convincing evidence of his existence and parentage. His apparent descendant Debbie O'Grady found that Michael and family emigrated to Australia, arrived at Port Philip [Melbourne] Oct 1841 on the ship Agricola, having m. c.1822 Margaret Barrett, had 14 issue, 6 in AUS, d. 16 Aug 1855, Parkville VIC, age 51. This needs further confirmation but see Gallway-36 for details.

His will was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1849.[3] Beneficiaries in his will were:

  1. daughter Ellen, wife of William Moore Miller, Barrister at Law
  2. wife Harriette.

He was involved in leases of these estates: Additional facts: Inch 24th November 1786, Lisheen May 1787, Clounteens East May 1790, and Kilquane West May 1792 (Ref 5).

1. He was Major in 16th Foot.

2. He was Residential Magistrate for Cork District.

3. He was Dep-Insp-Gen Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC).

4. He d. of typhus fever.
