John was the son of Thomas Gallwey and Mary Mahony.
He joined the 24th Regiment of Infantry as an Ensign on 1st October 1800, he was aged 15. He progressed to Lieutenant in 1801. In 1802 he transferred to the 16th Regiment of Foot where he was promoted to Captain in 1805. He left the service in 1819 and joined the Constabulary.[1]
He was a Captain in the 16th Regiment of Foot when he married Bridget, daughter of Neptune Blood, at Athlone in County Westmeath on 19th June 1819.[1][2] They had:[1]

In addition to the issue above he also had: Michael, seemingly b. 11 Mar 1801 by Johanna Murphy, illeg, at Killarney (church record not yet imaged: Book No 2, Page 1, Entry No 110, Record ID KY-RC-BA-294290), father John Gallwey, Killarney. Michael was dismissed as sub-constable from RIC for drunkenness 1829, see NAI Ref CSO/RP/1829/1789 which refers to "letter he received from Capt John Gallwey, Subinspector for County Cork, Ballincollig, requesting that his son, subconstable Michael Gallwey, be transferred to another station rather than dismissed, having been seen in a ‘tipsy state’ "- pretty convincing evidence of his existence and parentage. His apparent descendant Debbie O'Grady found that Michael and family emigrated to Australia, arrived at Port Philip [Melbourne] Oct 1841 on the ship Agricola, having m. c.1822 Margaret Barrett, had 14 issue, 6 in AUS, d. 16 Aug 1855, Parkville VIC, age 51. This needs further confirmation but see Gallway-36 for details.
His will was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1849.[3] Beneficiaries in his will were:
