Biography

1. Navy record gives dob as 1843 but suspect he lied to meet their minimum age rules.

2. Donona also spelled Donour or Donoure.

3. Marriage cert lists him as aged 23 yrs, occupation Sheriff Officer

4. Surname on marriage cert written as Gallway but assumed it should be Gallwey; same error for his father;

5. Death cert lists his mother as Johanna.

6. In the family record he is ancestor of the Sheriff Branch of the family.

7. John left school at 16 and joined the Royal Navy Dec 1860, was 5ft 5.5in tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, conduct very good, served on Hawke in China station, invalided out 4 Mar 1864 with chronic dysentry [1],

8. He emigrated to Australia, joined Queensland Sheriff's Dept 1 June 1864/5 [2]

9. Made Bailiff of Southern District Court on 7 Dec 1889, Chief Bailiff of Supreme Court Oct 1888, Under-Sheriff 3 Feb 1992 [3] , "was a warm hearted, broad shouldered, deep-chested man, with a very gentle nature" [4].

10. He resided at Union St off Gregory Terrace, made Sheriff and Marshal of the Supreme Court 3 Jul 1902 and died the same day at 6 pm [5] bur 4 Jul in Bruce grave (his wife's family) at Toowong Cemetery (Portion 7, Section 12, Grave No 9; [6], attended by his cousin Daniel from Belmore; he had been ill for some weeks.

11. He was the ancestor of the Sheriff branch of the family.
