Lars was born at Torsnes in Jondal in 1752, and was the son of Johan Daniel Larsson Galtung and Marta Hansdotter Gjøn.[1]
He bought his siblings' shares of south Torsnes in 1778 and 1780, leaving him the sole owner; his mother kept a small part which she managed on her own.[1]
He gained a lot of money and several churches through his marriage, and was himself a man with good business sense. He built ships and ran a sawmill. He was a member of Selskapet for Norges Vel, and was the person from Strandebarm (Kvam) who elected representatives to send to Eidsvoll in 1814.[1]
He married Ragnhild Kristoffersdatter Hjeltnes from Ulvik in 1781.[1] Their children were:
