Biography

1. He owned Lota, ‘bred to the law and very eminent in his profession’ was admitted to Gray’s Inn 16 May 1668 and subsequently called to the Bar in Ireland (Ref 4). For references to his extensive legal practice see Refs 5, 6 , 7 & 8.

2. He was MP for Cork City in the Parliament of 1689 and a JP for the county and city, and was appointed a Commissioner for applotting tax for Co Cork under King James II’s commission 10 Apr 1690.

3. For his adherence to the Jacobite cause [support of King James II] he was outlawed in 1690 and his estates forfeited. His outlawry came to be reversed (17 June 1693), and he received a Royal Pardon (1 Aug 1695), and he got in and out of trouble with the Irish House of Commons in 1707 for taking young James Cotter to England.

4. He brought three claims before the Chichester House Commissioners in 1700, of which two were successful (Ref 9). His will, dated 7 Feb 1711, was proved 17 Feb 1712/13.

5. He was bur in the family vault at Rathconey (Bishop Dive Downes, who visited Rathconey on 1 Oct 1700, mentions ‘Counsellor Galway, who has a tomb in the church’ (Ref 10). See ref 2.
