Robert Michael Gore Gambier, known as "Robin", was born in the New Forest, Hampshire, England, on 1st November 1904. His parents were Michael Seymour Gore Gambier and Irene Marion Bentley, of Suddon House, Wincanton, Somerset.
In adult life he became a Royal Navy officer. He served aboard a number of ships, submarines and submarine depot ships.
In 1931 he married Rosemary Caroline James (15 Jul 1909 - 28 May 1986), the daughter of Capt. Arthur Parkinson James, RN (1864 - 1951), of Woodhayes, Henstridge, Somerset, and Caroline Elizabeth Burnand (1864 - 1914). They had two children (two sons?).
