Biography

Buried at Chestnut Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Chestnut Hill, Ashe Co., NC

The 1850 Census of Ashe, North Carolina gives Wm Gambill age 24, Nancy Gambill 26. Their children were Martha J. 4, Burgys 2, and Mary J. 1. All were born in North Carolina.

The 1860 census of Ashe North Carolina gives William Gambill 33 with wife Zilda age 33. Jane 10 is our profile subject. But, it appears William has a new wife since 1850, when it was Nancy. Robert Gambill age 30 is next door, along with Martha Gambill age 50.

There is report of a marriage 16 Dec 1845 in NC between William Gambille and Nancy Landreth. The marriage to Landreth is also supported by the findagave memorial for Mary's brother, Andrew Jackson Gambill.

The real bio of my 3rd great grandfather

He is buried on Chestnut Hill in the family Cemetery on Wiley F Gambill Road in Ashe County NC. On the land that is owned by My Uncle Jack Gambill. This property was once owned by William Gambill and Grazilda. The Chestnut Hill Missionary Baptist Church has no affiliation to this Cemetery.

William J Gambill born 10/10/ 1826 Died 2/16/1890 he was the son of Martha Patsey Gambill 1807-1874 and an unknown man. She was the daughter of William Martin Gambill and Cynthia Cox. Both of her sons, William and Robert, took Martha's last name and we have been uncertain of who the lucky man/men were who sired William and Robert. Currenty a Y-DNA test is underway to determine the sire.

John Martin Gambill was Martha's brother who also had a son with Anne Williams ( 1808-1828)named William J Gambill born 10/31/1826 died 2/14/1867. He is buried in MO and he had married Nancy Landreth. There has been much speculation on perhaps Martha raised her brother John and Anne Williams son William, as Anne died at 20. This has been confirmed to be untrue as Anne and Johns son William died after the Civil War. John Martin Gambills son was the following who was a first cousin to this William J Gambill Name: William J Gambill Birth Date: 31 Oct 1826 Death Date: 14 Feb 1867 Cemetery: Blue Ridge Cemetery Burial or Cremation Place: Grandview, Jackson County, Missouri, United States of America Has Bio?: Y Father: John Gambill Spouse: Nancy Gambill Children: Burgess Asel Gambill Andrew Jackson Gambill James Martin Gambill

Researching at the Ashe County Courthouse and also searching for war records I came across a list of Ashe county men who enlisted and the 2 of them both were on this list. One is William J Gambill, Johns son and the other is Wm J Gambill Marthas son who was Grazildas husband. This William is the correct one as it has been passed down through the family that he lost most of the use of his arm.
