Biography

Martha was born in 1813. She was the daughter of Robert Gamble and Mary Sweatman.

Martha married Levi Fitzpatrick Goodman. She is mentioned with her married name in her father's will (attached). Her husband Levi is one of the two named executors of the will. In the 1850 census [1] she is living in Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina with her husband Levy and six children: Mary S. (age 12), William E. (age 10), John E. (age 8), Lewis N. (age 6), Rebecca J. (age 4), and an unnamed infant (age 1). The census show the Goodman farm as being adjacent or near the farms of Martha's brothers William, John F. and David. In the 1850 Slave Schedules [2] there are three people living as slaves on the Goodman farm.

By the 1860 census [3] Martha and her husband have moved to Long View Township, Ashley, Arkansas with their children listed only as W. E. Goodman (m age 20), L. N. Goodman (m age 15), R. J. Goodman (f age 13), L. C. Goodman (m age 11) and S. A. (f age 5). In the 1860 Slave Schedules [4] there are seven people living as slaves on the Goodman farm.

In the 1870 census [5] Martha and Levi have again moved, this time to Smith, Mississippi. There children are now: Marey (age 32), Rebecca (age 22), Levi (age 21), Sarah (age 15) and Jane (age 7). All the Goodman children were born in South Carolina except Sarah and Jane which were born in Arkansas. There is also a young girl Emma Barfield (age 10), born in South Carolina living with the family.

In the 1880 census [6] Martha and Levi are in Cherokee, Texas with two children, Calhoun (age 30) and S. A. (age 26) and a grandson W. L. (age 9). Note: the births of the three children are South Carolina, Arkansas and Texas respectively.

Martha passed away in 1888 and is buried beside her husband in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Cherokee County, Texas. Find A Grave: Memorial #57370162
