< Helen Schaffer was put up for adoption between the ages of 5 and 6 . She is on the 1930 Federal Census as the adopted daughter of William James Gamble and his wife Adelaide Aaronson Gamble, Norwalk, Connecticut. I can't get to NY to check out any census that they have at their library. And the State of NY won't give me any information because I'm " just her daughter ". Helen's birth father is German and her mother was Irish. They were not married. He was married to someone else. William and Adelaide named her Dorothy Celeste Gamble. I found her with her birth mother on the 1925 New York State Census. Her birth name is Helen Louise Shaffer, her birth mother's name is Maude Shaffer.
