1667 Birth and Parents

Since he was shown as administrator of his father's estate in 1688, he had to have been aged 21 at the time, hence born not later than 1667.

The parents of Richard Gambra are shown by an IGI Record as Dimindigo Grabra and Elizabeth LNU. Elizabeth is the Eliza Gambral who is to receive a bequest in the will of Gyles Blyzzard [1]

Robert Lewis [2] believes that Elizabeth was the widow or daughter of Domingo Gambra(h), of Charles County who died about the same time Giles wrote his will. That would make her either the mother or sister of Richard Gambra, who shared the Battersea tract with Thomas Lewis.

13 Nov. 1688 Richard Gambra witnessed an indenture from Richard Fowkes, Planter, to Richard Hes and Philip Mason for 10,000 lbs. tobo. : tract called "Bartonzee" cont. 500 acs. [4]

(Note: on 19 June 1692, Indent fr Philip Mason and wife to Thomas Lewis for 6,000 lbs tobo: one half of tract called Battersea, bound by Cash Ck., 250 acs. [5]

5 Mar 1694: Indent. fr Wm. Thompson, planter, to Richard Gambrah, planter,

  • for 8,000 lbs tobo,
  • half the parcel called " Batterzee", which Richard Hes and and Philip Mason purchased from Richard "Hawke" (Sic).
  • The 500 acs lately in poss. of Wm. Thompson and Thomas Lewis... cont. 500 acs.
  • Division made with consent of Wm. Thompson and Thomas Lewis. [6]

I Richard Gambray of Prince George’s County being sick . . .

  • to my son Richard Gambray all this parcel of land whereon I now dwell called Batterae cont. 250 acs. and the negro Catherine and her issue.
  • to my daughter Mary Gambray the negro Jane and her issue.
  • to my dear & loving wife during her widowship a living on the plantation whereon I now dwell and a widows part.
  • if my wife is with child at this time I desire that all the rest of my estate be equallly divided among my three children, but if not to be divided between Richard and Mary Gambray.
  • I appoint Col. Henry Darnell and Mr. Clement Hill to be my trustees.

Signed and sealed with a cursive signature by Richard Gambray on 7 AUG 1702 and witnessed by John Watkins, William Glover and Elizabeth Dickerson. Probated 8 JUN 1703.[7]

  • The account of Mr. Henry Acton & Anne his wife adms. of all goods of Ricd. Gambra, late of Pr. Geo. Co decd.
  • The accountants charge themselves with the appraisements sent up to the office appointed 21 APR 1704 in the amount of 343.11.11.
  • Payments are hard to read, not much paid out to creditors balance remaining was 293.5.4

Testamentary Papers Box 13/folder 63 Inventory

Will PG Co: Box 1, folder 13

  • The original will is hard to read but was signed by Richard Gambra and sealed with a red wax seal. The name of his wife is not mentioned. It does mention 2 children: Richard & Mary. It looks like he wrote the whole thing himself.

Bond Box 1/folder 38

  • Handwritten bond note binds Henry Acton for 400 lbs. along with Ninian Beall & Thomas Dickeson (his mark). Acton & Beall signed & sealed with wax. Witnesses were Edward Willott & John Banks (Buck?) Dated 11 JAN 1702 in PG Co. Name in this document is Richard Gambrall.

Accounts Liber 1/359 LOC 1/11/3/6 William Stone was the adm. of the dec. rented a plantation. There is no mention of a wife and estate is very small, only a few lbs. But this could be the husband of Ann.

I do hereby acknowledge to have recd. of Henry Acton father in law to Mary Murlow all her porton that was left to her by her father Richd. Gambrile and do discharge the said Henry Acton from all debts, bills, bonds & legacies and accounts whatsoever pertaining to the estate of Richard Gambrile decd. as witness my hand and seal this 15 APR 1719 by Wm Murlow (his mark) and Mary Murlow (her mark) Witnessed by John Taylor. 2 Jul 1679: Domingo Gambra creditor of Daniel Goldson. Inv. of Daniel Goldson lists under debts: "Dorringo Gambrell" [10]

1685: Edward Prise bound to "Domindego A Gambra to age 21.

12 Jan 1685/6: James Browne, Serv't to "Domindigo A Gambrah" judged age 15. (Note: at same court Giles Blizard had a serv't judged age 19) [11]

Other Gambrill Facts

Augustine Gambrill d. 1774 is connected to the Marriotts. Witnesses to his will were John Marriott and John Sewell he died. in AA Co. His oldest son was named William.

Test. Proc. Liber 31/41 LOC 1/12/3/43 Augustine Gambrill was named the exec. of the estate of William Stevens by his will. 10 SEP 1739.
