Biography
Andrew Garran was an English born Australian journalist and politician, and he was the editor of the Sydney Morning Herald from 1873 to 1885, one of many newspapers he worked in his long newspaper career. Including as correspondent to the London Times from Sydney for many years, retaining this position until his death in 1901. He served in the New South Wales, Legislative Council and was a supporter of the Australian Federation Movement, though by politics a Free Trader.
Andrew Garran was born in 1825, as Andrew Gamman, in or about London England. He is believed to have been the third child of Robert Gamman, a merchant, and his wife Mary Ann, (née Mathews). Andrew studied at Hackney Grammar School, a theological coaching college in Norfolk, later Spring Hill College in Birmingham, and then the University of London. He primarily trained for the Congregationalist ministry, and this was his first calling.
In 1850, he was forced to immigrate to the Colony of South Australia for his health, and in doing so he met George Fife Angas. He was appointed the 'Christian instructor' for the immigrant ship Ascendant's voyage. Arriving in Adelaide in mid January 1851. In South Australia he did some preaching, while also working as a journalist and later editor on the Austral Examiner. After an attempt to make his fortune on the Victorian Goldfields, he returned to Adelaide In 1853, as co-editor of the South Australian Register. The next year now named Andrew Garran, he married Mary Isham Sabine, the daughter of a well-to-do chemist Mr. John Sabine, and also a devout Congregationalist.
Andrew and Mary Garran left South Australia in 1856 for Sydney, New South Wales, after John Fairfax offered Andrew the position of assistant editor at the Sydney Morning Herald. While serving his time in this position he also returned to study, completing a Law degree at the University of Sydney, coming away with a Doctorate of Laws in 1870. Serving on the New South Wales Legislative Council from the 8th of March 1887 until the 19th of October 1892. And re-entered the Legislative Council from March 1895 until November 1898.
Andrew Garran passed away in June 1901, only 6 months after the Australian Federation came it being. And he is buried in the Rookwood General Cemetery, Rookwood, New South Wales, Australia. His wife, one son and five of their seven daughters survived him. His son Robert Randolph Garran GCMG (1867 - 1957), was the first Australian Federal Government employee after the federation of the Australian colonies in 1901.
