Biography

Married Zilpha Grooms September 24, 1854, in Thomas County, GA. Frank, like his father, Max, Was a Mason.

Francis Marion Gandy served in Company E, 50th GA Infantry, Confederate States Army, in the War between the States. He enlisted on May 15, 1862, at Fort Brown in Savannah, GA, for "3 years or the war."

He entered as a Private, and his record shows that he was admitted to General Hospital number 19 in Richmond, VA, between July and August 1862. Returned to duty, he was then wounded at Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862.

Another note in his file shows that he was admitted in early October 1862 to Wayside Hospital (General Hospital No. 9) in Richmond, and was later transferred to Bellview Hospital. In January and February 1863, he was reported to be in Thomas County, GA, "severely wounded." Sometime between February and August, Frank rejoined his company. He was not yet recovered, and his muster record shows "present, sick. Disabled from gunshot wound."

After being promoted to Sergeant, Frank was wounded again, shot in the left shoulder, and twice hospitalized -- first on October 31, 1864, at the C.S.A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, VA; then at Wayside Hospital at Richmond. He was discharged from the hospital to return to duty on December 28, 1864. He was then detached to Lynchburg, VA, where he, along with his entire regiment, was captured on April 13, 1865.

He died, at the age of 59, on October 20, 1895 in Dollar, Alabama. He is buried at the Gandy Cemetery, Coosa County, Alabama.[1]

Francis Marion's tomstone is inscribed with the Masonic emblem and an inscription which reads, "F.M. Gandy -- Call not back the dear departed / Anchored safe where storms are o'er / On the border land we left him / Soon to meet, to part no more."
