Brinkley was either born in Cheraws District (Darlington County), SC, or moved there early in his life. His home was near Society Hill, in a neighborhood which later became known as the Antioch Community, named for a Baptist Church formed there in 1830. In Darlingtoniana: A History of People, Places , and Events in Darlington Co., SC, author Horace Rudisill notes that the community is "about evenly divided on either side of Big Seed Tick Branch, which empties into Black Creek. Some of the earliest settlers on or close by Big Seed Tick were . . . Brinkley Gandy . . . This was a staunch Baptist neighborhood . . . Its membership was not not composed of wealthy planters, but plain, hardworking farmers owning few if any slaves..."
About 1798, Brinkley married Leah Nasworthy (also Norsworthy and other variant spellings), the dtr of William and Elizabeth Ogburne Nasworthy, whose family came to America from the village of Widdicombe in Devon, England.
Brinkley appears in the 1790 Census of Cheraws District, S.C., and, for the last time in SC, as the head of a household in 1800 in Darlington County (Cheraws District).
Shortly thereafter, the couple removed to Montgomery County, Georgia, where Harden indicates that Brinkley's oldest son, Book Gandy, was 2 years old about 1803.
A successful farmer, Brinkley's tax assessments are duly recorded on available Montgomery County tax lists (1805, 1806, and 1822). Jury lists include him in June 1810, and July 1816. Records of real estate transactions confirm his residence in Montgomery/Tattnall Co., GA (Montgomery was created from Tattnall).
Brinkley served as an Ensign in the War of 1812 in the Tattnall & Montgomery (Georgia) Militia, 6th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division.
The last public record in Montgomery County that mentions him before his death is dated December 22, 1829. On that date, he witnessed a land transaction.
Brinkley's father was Ephraim Gandy, who was living in South Carolina prior to the Revolution. Ephraim served in the Revolution until its end.
