We don't have proof that his middle name was "Madison". The U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865 recorded his middle name as "Matthew(s)".
John Madison served in Company E, 50 GA Infantry in CSA service. His records states that enlisted at 21 years of age on May 15, 1862, and describes him as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes, and auburn hair. He was wounded at Antietam on September 17, 1862. He returned to Thomas County to recuperate, and applied for a discharge because of his injuries. A Certificate of Disability was filed on April 27, 1863. He drew a Confederate pension, as did his widow after his death.
On 23 Apr 1865, Thomas County, Georgia, he married Sarah A Sherrod (1842–1901). She s buried at Ochlochnee Cemetery (BL 802) Pavo, GA. Her death devestated him, and he moved to Florida. He later returned, however, and married his second wife, Addie Johnson (1868-1964).

Something must have changed his mind, however, as John Madison returned to Georgia and married Addie Johnson.
John and wife, Sally, had the following known children:
With his second wife, Addie, he had two known children:
