Biography

Jesse was kidnapped at the age of 4 by his father, and grew up believing that his father's second wife, Lizzie Thornton, was his mother. When he was grown and married, with a family of his own, Sam's brother Henry called Jesse to him on his deathbed and confessed that Jesse's mother was alive and living in Panama City, Florida. After hearing the news, Jesse set out by train to Panama City and, during the train ride, found out that his mother was living in Madrid, Alabama, where they had recently moved.

Jesse married Luna Willis and was reported to have 10 children with her: Mary Easum Gandy, b 26 July 1905, Tift Co., GA; Jessie May Gandy, b. 14 Dec. 1906, Tift Co.; Oren James Gandy, b. 05 April 1908, Cook Co., GA; Nonabelle Gandy, b. 05 March 1910, Tift Co; Robert Daniel Gandy, b. 05 Dec. 1912, Thomas Co., GA; Melvin Gandy, b. 15 Oct. 1914, Tift Co.; Annie Eliza Gandy, b. 03 June 1917, Thomas Co., GA; Agnes Gandy, b. 04 Nov 1918, Thomas Co.; Gordon Hilyard Gandy, b. 30 Dec. 1921, Thomas Co.; Mildred Gandy, b. 07 Oct. 1926, Thomas Co.

Melvin's wife's obituary states: "Mrs. Eunice M. (Gilliard) Gandy, 81, of 1107 Frankford Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at her residence. Born in Grady County, GA, she moved here in 1948 from Thomas County, Ga. She was a retired salesperson and homemaker. She was also Protestant by faith. Mrs. Gandy was preceeded in death by her husband, Melvin Gandy. She is survived by two sons, Kenyon Gandy and Kenneth O. "Buddy" Gandy, both of Panama City; two sisters, Amy G. Dixon of Panama City Beach, and Evelyn G. Vick of Roswell, GA; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Gandy will be conducted on Thursday, April 10, 1997, at 2 p.m. EST in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, Ga. Mrs. Gandy's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m."
