Gandy was born in Taylor County WV on May 29, 1873 to Amos Franklin Gandy and Charity Jane Warthen. His death certificate has the wrong birth date on it and his parents names are wrong, but they were not reported by a family member and apparently he gave it his best guess. John married Clara Belle Arble on Nov 1, 1898. Clara was born on Jan 2, 1898 in Taylor County WV to David William Arble and Lamanda Annon. They had one daughter, Isola Nora Gandy who was born Jun 9, 1899. She married Henry Cecil Whitehair, had 3 children, Dortha Rae, Carrie Jane and Robert Eugene Whitehair. Isola died as a young mother on Dec 5, 1924 of pulmonary tuberculosis. Clara also died as a young mother on May 8, 1901 of consumption in Carnegie PA. According to the 1900 Census, Clara, John, Isola and Amos were living in Carnegie PA at that time. By the 1910 Census, Isola was listed with her uncle Theodore Gandy's family, and John was on the 1910 Census for Kern County CA listed as a helper. By the 1940 Census he was listed as living in Upshur County WV as a lodger at age 67. He died October 1, 1942 in Buckhannon, Upshur County WV at age 69 of a pulmonary hemmorage.
