Biography

"Abram Gannibal was an Afro-Russian nobleman, military engineer and general. Kidnapped as a child and presented as a gift to Peter the Great, he was raised in the Emperor's court household as his godson. Gannibal eventually rose to become a prominent member of the imperial court in the reign of Peter's daughter Elizabeth. He is a great-grandfather of the author and poet Alexander Pushkin He passed away in 1781."[1]

Was captured as slave and taken to Constantinople, where he and his brother weer either bought by agents of Peter I in 1698 or were taken in 1705 by Savva Raguzinsky as a gift to Peter I (Peter the Great). The poet Alexander Pushkin wrote his famous poem about him, «Арап Петра Великого».
