Biography

Samuel Garber was born in Rockingham County, Virginia in the year 1818. When about seventeen years old he came to Montgomery County, Ohio with his parents. Doubtless as a young man he traveled most of the way on foot because his father's wagons were well loaded with younger children, household goods and farm implements. In the year 1841, six years after his arrival in Montgomery County, Samuel married Miss Lydia Heeter. They reared a family of eight children, a ninth baby died in infancy. In the year 1842 Samuel and Lydia became members of the Old German Baptist Brethren Church. Like his father, Samuel took an active part in church affairs. On February 27, 1851 he became a Deacon and on July 29, 1852 was advanced to the... [1]

Elder Samuel Garber was an outstanding leader of his people and was highly respected by those who were not of his faith. At his death, which occurred on February 28, 1862, he passed his mantle of Christian Faith and leadership to his sons Henry and John who, like their father, became leaders and servants of the Church.

The name Garber and the Wolf Creek church are to a great extent synonymous. Samuel and Lydia Garber were elected to the Ministry in the original old brick church in the year 1852. This church had its origin in the year 1811 and has been the house of worship for many, many Garbers for well over a century. The present frame church was constructed in 1882 which was during the last year of Elder Samuel Garber's dedicated life.

Samuel died 1882 and is buried at the Eversole Cemetery, Montgomery County, Ohio. [2]

Obituary

GARBER - Elder Samuel Garber was born December 22, 1818, and died February 28, 1882, aged 63 years, 2 months, and 6 days. Brother Samuel died of consumption. He bore his lingering disease with patience and Christian fortitude. He gave instructions concerning his funeral months before the time of his change came. During his confinement to the house and his bed he was fully resigned to the will of the Lord. He was conscious and of good mind to his last. During the last several weeks his voice failed him so that he could talk only in a whisper. When his last day came, early in the morning a change was noticeable. He said his time was drawing nigh, and the sooner he could go the better; and that he would now give the care of the church into the hands of his surviving elder and fellow-laborers, and said that heaven was promised him and in part belonged to him through the blessed gospel which he ever tried to maintain. He also gave encouraging counsel to the family to the faithful to the end. ~H.G.
