Biography

Mary Garbit was born in about 1820 in Parr, St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Garbit. She was christened on 17 Sep 1820 at St Helens Parish Church. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as collier.

Mary's father died in November 1826, when she was about six years old. The family was living in Parr at the time.

Mary's mother married Ralph Banks, a collier, on 2 Nov 1829.

By June 6th 1841, Mary and her two younger sisters Ann and Olivia were living with their mother and stepfather in Parr Stocks. Also in the household were 13-year-old Thomas Hooton (or possibly Horton), and Mary's uncle Richard Highcock with his 15-year-old son William. Just next door were Mary's uncle and aunt George and Ann Highcock, and her 13-year-old cousin Mary Ann Highcock.

Mary married Samuel Brown on 4 Jun 1843 at All Saints Church in Rainford, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more) and living in Windle; neither had been married before. Samuel was a collier. Their fathers were named as Daniel Brown (labourer) and John Garbage (collier). The witnesses were James Makin and Ann Garbage. Neither Garbit signed the register, both made their mark, so "Garbage" was the clergyman's understanding of their name rather than theirs.

By March 30th 1851, Samuel and Mary had their own household in Parr Stocks. Samuel was working as a miner, and they had one child, nine-month-old John.

By April 7th 1861, they were still living in Parr Stocks. Samuel was working as a coal mine labourer, and so was ten-year-old John, even though he was their only child.

Their son Thomas was born in about 1863, in Parr.

By April 2nd 1871, they were living at 43 Watery Lane, Sutton - still in St Helens - with Margaret Jenkins, the sister-in-law of Mary's sister Olive, and Jane Jenkins, Margaret's illegitimate daughter. Olive and her daughter Elizabeth were also living there. John and Thomas were both still living with their parents. Samuel was employed as a labourer.

John married Ellen Kenwright in 1874.

By April 3rd 1881, Samuel and Mary had their own household again, at 45 Watery Lane (back) in Sutton, just the two of them and Thomas. Samuel was working as a carter, and Thomas was working as a coal pit labourer.

Mary died in 1882 in St Helens, aged 60. Her death was registered in the third quarter of the year, in Prescot district. She was buried on 30 Aug 1882 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton. Her address was recorded as Sutton.
