John was born in 1848.[1] He is the son of Thomas Garbutt and Jane Overend.[2]

In 1863, John emigrated to Queensland with his mother and brothers Charles and Arthur.[3]

John moved to New South Wales about 1873[4], where he "resided at Government House for some time as a kind of secretary and confidential friend to Lord [Augustus] Loftus."[5][6] While in Sydney, John (now using the spelling Garbett) received considerable attention for his proposal "to construct or supply a high-level bridge between Dawes Point, Sydney, and Milson's Point, on the North Shore."[7][8] Although this effort failed,[9] the Sydney Harbour Bridge was built about forty years later at the proposed location.

John was struck by a train and killed at Petersham station, near Sydney, 19 Aug 1894.[10][11][12][4]
