Biography

Juana was born about 1679 to Francisco García Holgado and Maria Montoya.[1] In 1694 she married Francisco Martín Serrano[1] and they had 12 children.[2] They were living in Santa Cruz in 1707.[3]

In 1752, Juana wrote her will in Chimayo, naming herself Juana García de los Reyes, naming her husband Francisco Martín, deceased, and their children:

Francisco, Juan, Nicolas, Lorenza, María, Francisco Xabier, Marsial, Ana Petrona, Josefa, Angela; and Manuel and Blas, now deceased.[2]

Research Notes

  1. Her birth year is based on her being about 15 when she married.
  2. Her name is listed as Juana García on her prenuptial investigation in 1694[1] and the 1707 Santa Cruz census.[3] On her son Marcial's marriage record in 1737 and her 1752 will,[2] she is called Juana Garcia de los Reyes, most likely in honor of her paternal grandmother, Juana de los Reyes Sánchez de Monroy. In Origins of New Mexico Families, Fray Chávez names her both Juana García and Juana Gárcia de los Rios.[4]
  3. Juana's mother, María Montoya, was not the Maria Montoya who was most likely the daughter of Diego de Montoya and María Ortíz de Vera. She was married to Nicolás Lucero de Godoy. Nothing is known about Juana's mother other than her name.

García de los Ríos-18 and Garcia-7814 appear to represent the same person because: duplicate profiles. Her name is listed as Juana García on her prenuptial investigation in 1694 and the 1707 Santa Cruz census. On her son Marcial's marriage record in 1737 and her 1752 will, she is called Juana Garcia de los Reyes. In Origins of New Mexico Families, Fray Chávez names her both Juana García and Juana Gárcia de los Rios but does not list a source for the 2nd name. I think we should use the name "Juana García" and add the additional last name "García de los Reyes." García de los Rios is explained in the Research Note along with the sources.
