It appears that Jane may have been an indigenous woman from around the Grafton area. Per an application to the Australian National Native Title Tribunal:[1]

Persons claiming to hold native title:
The Gumbaynggirr People are the native title claim group on whose behalf the Applicant makes this application.
Gumbaynggirr People are described as Aboriginal persons who are:

Quoting from the granting of the above mentioned Native Title application:[2]

I have decided that the claim in the Gumbaynggirr People #4 application satisfies all of the conditions in ss 190B and 190C of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth).1 Therefore the claim must be accepted for registration and entered on the Register of Native Title Claims.

I have been identifying Jane with a "Jane Garde" who arrived in NSW with relatives in 1883, per ship "Assaye." Her age on the Passenger list is 15.
