Biography

Eve and her brother George were both baptised on 16 February 1823 in Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset. Her parents are Joseph Gardiner (abt.1744-1837) and Sarah Trapp. Her father was a labourer. [1]

In 1841 Eve (18) is living with her mother Sarah (60) and siblings Caroline (25) and George (20) at Riddle(?) Farm, Haselbury Plucknett. [2]

On 15 April 1844 she married Henry White (abt.1821-1867) in Haselbury. [3]The marriage registry entry records Henry as a labourer. His father is James White labourer. Eve is recorded as a weaver and her father is Joseph Gardener, weaver. Both made their mark. Witnesses were Isaac Hayward and Maria Gardener. [4]

Son Charles White (1845-) Charles was baptised on 14 April 1845 in Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset. His father Henry is recorded as a labourer. [5]

Son Adam White (1847-) was baptised on 14 November 1847 in West Chinnock. His father Henry is recorded as a shepherd. [6]

In 1851 Eve (28) weaver born Haselbury was living with her husband Henry (30) shepherd born Haselbury and children Charles (6) born Haselbury, Adam (4) born Haselbury and Sam (1) born West Chinnock. [7]

Son James White (1852-) was baptised in Curry Rivel, Somerset on 3 October 1852. His parents are recorded as Henry White, a shepherd and Eve. [8]

Daughter Maria (White) Gray (1854-) was born on Christmas Day in 1854. She was baptised on 14 Oct 1855 in Merriott, Somerset. Her parents were recorded as Henry White, a shepherd and Eve. The family lived at Bow Barn in Merriott at the time of the baptism.[9][10]

Son Henry was born in the last quarter of 1858 in Yeovil Registration District. [11]

Sons Henry and George were both baptised on 10 February 1861 in West Chinnock. There is a note against George Patten(?) White that he was born on 25 October 1857 but this is possibly in error. The parents Henry and Eve White, West Chinnock are recorded for both children. [12]

On 7 April 1861 the family lived at 11 Higher Street, West Chinnock. In the house are Henry White (40) Shepherd born in Nottingham Dorset (this may be an error), Eve (37) born Hazelbury Plucknett, and their chiildren Charles (16) born West Chinnock, agricultural labourer, Adam (13) born West Chinnock, agricultural labourer, Sam (10) born Middle Chinnock agricultural labourer, James (7) born Curry Rivel agricultural labourer, and Maria (6) born in Merriott, Henry (3) born Merriott and George (10 months) born West Chinnock. Son Thomas was baptised on 3 March 1864 in West Chinnock. His parents are recorded as Henry White, labourer and Eve, [15]

Daughter Mary was born on 6 February 1865. [16]

Eve's husband Henry died age 47 and was buried on 27 April 1867 in West Chinnnock. [17]

In 1871 the family still lived in West Chinnock. In the house are Eve (49) born Hazelbury Plucknett geith weaver, and her children James (18) born Curry Rival sail cloth weaver, and Maria (16) born in Merriott geith weaver, Henry (13) born West Chinnock labourer assistant in a stable, Thomas (8) born West Chinnock and Mary (6) born West Chinnock. In 1881 Eve aged 58 lives alone in South Street, Haselbury. It is stated that she was formerly a chain web weaver. [20]

By 1891 Eve has gone to live with her son Henry and his family in Victoria Street, Hinton St George, Chard. In the house are Henry White (34) flax heckler born Chinnock, his wife Eliza White (38) born Langport, Somerset, Charles White (4), Eva WHite (64) his widowed mother born Haselbury, his mother in law Mary Laver (78) born Langport and Victor Brooke (3 months) a boarder born Eastborne, Sussex.
