Biography

This profile is part of the Gardner Name Study.

Benoni was born about 1644. He was the son of George Gardiner.[1] He passed away perhaps in 1731, perhaps in Portsmouth, at the home of his daughter, Bridget.[2]

He married Mary [3] at Newport, Newport, Rhode Island, USA[4]

Burial at Job Sherman's Family Farm Cemetery, Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island, United States

Mary died at the home of her son-in-law, Job Sherman.

Note: From Gardner History and Genealogy 1907, " Benony gave his age in testimony in 1727 as upwards of ninety. In 1671 he took the Oath of Allegiance. In 1679 he, with forty one others of Narragansett, signed a petition to the King, praying that he would put and end to these differences about the government.

On 6 September 1687 he is cited on Gov. Andros' tax roll at Rochester, (Kingstown) Rhode Island owing a “pole” (poll) tax of 1 s, and a property tax of 4s 3.5d, which places him as an adult resident and a property landholder in Kingstown, RI on this date. [5] This tax roll identifies a sum total of 136 heads of house living in the roughly 22.5 square mile area associated with Kingstown, RI on this date in 1687; one consequence of this sparse population is that he would have been well acquainted with many, if not all, of the individuals identified on this list. The list is a defacto definition of the people who were available to be his friends, neighbors, and allies; it would be essential to cultivate strong working relationships with these neighbors in order to survive on this frontier landscape. This cross reference tool provides hot links to peruse most of the 136 Wikitree families identified in this tax roll; families who were very frequently interconnected, or became interconnected, by marriage over the course of their lives and throughout the ensuing generations, further binding a network of neighbors into extended families. [6]

In September, 1715, he and his wife Mary deeded son Nathaniel land, being the westernmost part of the farm where Benony now dwells, and on the same day deed son Stephen, dwelling house, orchard, etc. In 1713, he and Mary deed land to son Isaac. "

From Gardner History and Genealogy, p 31. "1671: took the oath of allegiance. 1679: he, with 41 others of Narrgansett, signed a petition to the King, praying that he would 'put an end to these differences about the government thereof,' &c. Sept. 1785, he and wife Mary deeded son Nathaniel land, being westernmost part of farm where Benony now dwells, and on the same day deeded son Stephen dwelling house, orchard, &c. 1713: he and wife Mary deeded land to son Isaac."

Disputed Items

Various published and online account about Benoni Gardiner contain conflicted information about his birth, parentage and the ancestry/origins of his wife. Reports vary, too, regarding his death.

Benoni's reported testimony in 1727 claimed he was then "aged 90 years and upwards,"[7] but this would suggest he was not the son of Herodias, which is otherwise controverted because Benoni is included with her other children in conveyances to her Gardiner children.[8] In his work on the family, G. Andrews Moriarty (1944) provided still further reasoning and placed Benoni's birth as "1643-1645, and about 1644."[9]

An earlier genealogy by Mrs. Clara Gardner and John Milton Stanton placed Benoni's birth earlier (than 1644), calling his mother Sara Slaughter and suggesting the father, George Gardiner, the George Gardiner baptized 15 February 1599/1600 at Great Greenford, Middlesex, England, in turn a son of Rev. Michael Gardiner.[10] G. Andrew Moriarty found this association to be unsupported by the evidence the authors had presented and inconsistent with information about the New England immigrant. (Moriarty did not attribute parents nor an English marriage in his 1944 account of the Rhode Island immigrant, George Gardiner.[11])

Further as to his birth, WikiTree profiles have attributed various other dates, including one as "November 1, 1644" (at Newport) for which no corresponding reference was found. A bulletin board post seeking a reference for this birth vital data was made 20 July 2014, to which there was no response.

As to his death, WikiTree profiles have attributed a range of dates as 27 January 1731, 16 November 1729, and 1731. His place of death has been reported on WikiTree as both Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island, and Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. A survey of AmericanAncestors and FamilySearch historical records for supporting references was unsuccessful. (A bulletin board post will be created.)

Finally, WikiTree attributes two different ancestries to the wife of Benoni Gardiner. (Yet other conflicted ancestries are noted in print.) Benoni's wife reportedly died 1729/1730 "[12]

In one of the conflicted WikiTree accounts, she is Mary Jane Eldred, daughter of Samuel Eldred and Elizabeth Miller. This marriage was disputed by Gardner and Stanton in 1937 who noted "recent research by an Eldred genealogist" saying this "reveals the fact that Mary Eldred was born in 1646 and died in 1712, years before the death of Benoni's wife."[13] The Gardiner-Eldred marriage association is also disputed in a 1983 work by George C. Davis (published by Pettaquamscutt Historical Society). Davis reported Samuel Eldred's daughter Mary probably married Rouse Helme.[14]

The alternate conflicted marriages reports Benoni's wife as Mary Stanton, without further reference. Any number of Gardiner genealogies report Benoni's wife's maiden name is unknown. Until documentation is provided and/or more is provided regarding this marriage and/or ancestral connection, the report she was a Stanton seems suspect.

Notes

Benoni's year of birth is contested. It is often written as 1647. But, according to "The Gardiners of Narragansett," in 1727 Benoni stated his age to be "ninety and upwards," indicating his birth to be about 1637 instead of 1647. However, as the author points out, his parent were not married at this time, his mother being married to her first husband, John Hicks.

His last name shows up as Gardner, Gardiner, or Gardener in most records.

I see that his wife is still identified as Mary Eldred, despite what is explained in the narrative. Should this be changed?

I looked at her profile and it was requested back in 2019 to have her detached from Benoni. I have done so, and also detached Mary Eldred as mother of his children.

We need a Mary Unknown added as his spouse and mother of her children. I will do that.

I am not an Autosomal DNA expert but I am fairly knowledgeable on the subject. My discovery is the following: I am currently matching over 27,000 AncestryDNA testers and I find it just too coincidental that two of my matches are surnamed SLAUGHTER. Furthermore, I don’t consider the surname SLAUGHTER to be a common surname at all. Finally, since Benoni Gardner is my 7th great grandfather, his mother, in my opinion, was Sarah SLAUGHTER, especially since my two SLAUGHTER matches are very distant, meaning that they appear to fit the range in distance to a possible 8th great grandparent. Sarah SLAUGHTER would therefore be my 8th great grandmother.
A source containing original data from England, Essex Parish Registers, 1538-1900. Salt Lake City, Utah: FamilySearch, 2013 indicates a male GARDENER with a BAPTISM DATE of 22 MAY 1636 with a BAPTISM PLACE of Castle-Hedingham, Essex, England. Father is listed as George GARDENER. Mother is not listed. FHL Film Number 1472365.

If this document is referring to Benoni Gardiner, then I would argue that his date of birth must have been on or before his baptism date. The document states his BAPTISM DATE as being 22 MAY 1636. Again, his place of baptism is shown as Castle-Hedingham, Essex, England. Hence, I would also argue in favor of finding that Benoni was born in England and not in Rhode Island.

The unmerged match on this profile has not been worked by any of the profile managers in the past 6 months, for that reason, I am making the changes necessary.

I concur with Howard that we need to detach Benoni from this set of parents; Moriarty in 1944 made a strong case (stronger than the 1937 genealogy) for Benoni being son of Herodias Long and a different George Gardiner.
posted by Jillaine Smith
Leslie, unfortunately, your ancestress's 1937 genealogy provides no evidence to support that Benoni was born to the George Gardiner and Sarah Slaughter who were married in London in 1630. G. Andrews Moriarty's 1944 analysis makes a much stronger case that the immigrant George Gardiner was a different man, born far closer to 1615 than 1599/1600, and that Benoni was born in Rhode Island, closer to 1644, and was son of Herodias.

This Benoni (Benony) Gardner Gardiner-1394 has the wrong parents. This Benoni shoud be sourced to the Gardiners of Narrangansett reference GN 2 and his father George GN 1 as shown on George Gardiner-38 in Wiki. I am inclined to think that Herodius Long as shown in in GN and Long-161 Wiki is Benoni's mother.

We are talking the same George Gardiner but he has been set up with two different profiles. Gardiner-38 and the one Newell-916 set up that is noted as unsourced Gardiner-2183. Hopefully this will be reviewed. thanks all

My Benoni Gardiner was born in England in 1636 to George Gardiner and Sara Slaughter. While their ship was crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1637, Sara Slaughter died.

Your Benony Gardiner was born in 1644 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Howard,

Thank you for your comment. Benoni Gardiner is my 8th great grandfather, his half sister Dorcas Gardiner is my 8th great grandfather. Their father George Gardiner is my 9th great grandfather. Doesn't sound like we're talking about the same people.

Benony Gardiner is also my 7th great grandfather per ydna analysis. George Gardiner Gardiner-38 is my 8th and I finally succeeded in getting him to flow to me.

research for the unmerged match of Gardiner-1394 and 178:

I am Howard Renolds Reynolds-12610) and a ydna descendant of George, but ydna analysis indicates that his son George Gardiner-173 is my 6th great grandfather and then his son joseph is my 5th gr grandfather. I knew Bill Wright who also published geno including Benoni(y)'s father but remind me to dig it out . I have the whole Gardiners of Narranganset book loaded into FTM software and have expanded/corrected it in my research tree. I will make sure the GN ref and cem references are loaded. However, I think there has to be more agreement by the players involved before the merge happens and the upstream and downstream changes happen.
