William Gardiner of Bermondsey, Surrey J.P. (b. c. 1531 - d. 26 Nov 1597), was the son of:[1]
William Gardiner of Bermondsey,[1] & [of Hertfordshire],[2]
and Elizabeth Michell of Yorkshire.[1][2] He was the brother of Richard Gardiner, Sergeant-at-Arms to Henry VIII.[3]
William was a leather seller in London.[1][4] He served as MP for Lostwithiel in 1589, and MP for Helston in 1593.
Marriage
He married twice.[1] He probably did not have any children with his second wife Margaret Lucas of Gloucester. The mother of his children was his first wife, Frances Lucy, dau. of Robert Lucy of London.

William died at the age of 66, on 26 November 1597. He was buried on 22 December 1597 at Bermondsey. He was suc. by his grandson Christopher, son of Christopher (dvp).[1]
"In 1596 he quarrelled with Langley, the owner of the Swan theatre, and with William Shakespeare, and it is the investigation into this affair that underlies the contention that Shakespeare modelled Justice Shallow in The Merry Wives of Windsor on William Gardiner rather than on Thomas Lucy."[1]
