Elizabeth Jane Gardner was an American-born academic painter who spent most of her life in France. She was the first American woman to have her work exhibited at the Salon de Paris, in 1866.
Elizabeth Jane Gardner was born on 4 October 1837 in Exeter, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of George Gardner and Jane Lowell. She married Adolphe Williams Bouguereau on 22 June 1896 in the sixth arrondissement of Paris.[1]
