Biography

Project Logo
Kate (Gardner) Schmidt is an Outer Rim Ranger.

I started working on my family tree in the 1990's and have never stopped working on it. My ancestors are Mayflower passengers, a dozen or so Filles du Roi, a family who fled from Scotland after a scandal, slaveholders, survivors of the Deerfield Massacre, and lots and lots and lots of farmers.

These days, I'm more interested in other people's branches. Most of my time is spent working for WikiTree's US Black Heritage Project; I'm a team leader of both the USBH Notables project and the new US Black Heritage Family Builders project, which seeks to build (and connect!) trees from scratch for people who have recent Black ancestry. I am also a USBH Cemeteries Team member.

When I'm not puzzling over genealogy, I'm working with my husband to restore our 250-year-old house to its pre-Constitution-era glory. Oh, and, working on the genealogy of the Scots-Irish family who first "owned" the property we now live on.

DNA

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by a GEDmatch test match between Gerri Louise Gallagher and her second cousin Kate Gardner Schmidt. Their MRCA is their 2nd great grandmother Pamela Jane Weathers. Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 3.3, based on sharing 156.9 cM across 4 segments.

Legacy Notice

When I shuffle off this immortal coil, I would like all of the profiles that are of direct ancestors and their descendants to be entrusted to the care the WikiTree Team and/or my husband Nathan Schmidt, and/or my cousin Ginny Winslett, if she wants any of the Weathers profiles. Any non-family profiles with a privacy level of OPEN can be orphaned. Any non-family profiles with a privacy level of PRIVATE to be entrusted to WikiTree volunteers to manage as appropriate.

Okay, I added the project as manager. I had the wrong email.
Added African-American project to the trusted list for Clarence Ahart Brooks but can't figure out how to add the project as manager.
Just add us to the trusted list by going to the privacy tab on the profile and putting in this e-mail address for us: [email address removed] (be sure not to have any spaces before the address when you copy it in the box). Then after clicking the Add button, click on “add as manager” for that project.

Hi Kate!

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To find other potential relatives, continue adding sourced profiles for other lines until you can connect on all branches. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Have fun!

Hi Kate! Would you mind changing Sarah (Farland-25)'s maiden name to the correct spelling "McFarland" when you get a chance? The "Farland" on her marriage record was just a typo. Thanks!

Congratulation for adding your contributions in December. Whatever the quantity of your contributions, they all count. As I always say "Quality is better than quantity" to make a great family tree.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Add the project tag to your Following list to be kept up to date on any activity that occurs for that project.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)
