He was the son of Benjamin Gardner and Lucinda Burghardt, and the half-brother of Civil War soldiers Frank, James Henry and Levi Jackson of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war.
William was not employed at the time of the 1880 U.S. Census and reported as having a hip disorder.
William died in 1895. He is buried in Mahaiwe Cemetery, Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
