Biography

Rosa was born in the third quarter of 1855.[1][2]

Rosa was a single nurse at the General Hospital, Summer Lane, Birmingham when she met and married Edwin John NORTHCOTE on the 21st April 1881 in Handsworth, Staffordshire, England.[3][4]

Their first daughter, Elizabeth Rose, was born in 1883, and christened in Birmingham on the 6th May 1883.[5]

Rosa arrived in South Australia in 1883 on the Hesperus with her husband and daughter.[6][7]

After the death of her husband, Edwin John Northcote, in 1892 (aged 36 years), Rosa moved from Kent Terrace, Norwood to Chapel Street, Norwood (7th house on the left-hand side from Kent Terrace).

During the year 1894 she lived at No. 17 Chapel Street and during the years between 1895 and 1898 she was living at No. 6 Chapel Street, Norwood. Her occupation was given as Nurse.

The 5th house on the West side from Magill Road in Stephen Street, Norwood became her home in 1899. In 1900 she moved to the 7th house on the right-hand side up from Henry Street in Nelson Street, Norwood. Rosa continued to work as a nurse until she was admitted to hospital in September 1901.[8]

Her children were aged, Elizabeth Rose 20 years , Lily 17 years, Edwin Allen 15 years, and William Gardner 12 years, at the time of her incarceration. For 9 years Rosa had supported her family by working as a nurse. Rosa had endured the death of her 8 months old baby daughter May Zelah in February 1892 and that of her husband Edwin John in May the same year.

Rosa was admitted to Parkside Mental Hospital on 21st September 1901, at the age of 44, suffering from melancholia (depression).[9][10][11]

Rosaet NORTHCOTE passed away on the 26th July 1904 at the Parkside Lunatic Asylum from Cardiac Failure and Melancholia. She was registered as 48, the widow of Edward John NORTHCOTE, and living in Norwood at the time of her death.[12][13]

THE FRIENDS of the late Mrs. R. NORTHCOTE are informed that her Funeral will leave her daughter's (Mrs. J. Hignett) residence, 63, Chapel-street, Norwood, on FRIDAY, at 2.30 p.m., for the Payneham Cemetery.
P. GANNONI, Undertaker, Parade, Norwood.[14]

Transcriptions of letters addressed to the Coroner regarding her death follow:

To the Officer in Charge.
Police Station Adelaide.
Dear Sir,
Please inform the Coroner that a patient at the Parkside Lunatic Asylum, Rose Northcote at 46 years, died July 26th 1904 at 8-30 pm from natural causes namely cardiac failure and melancholia.
This patient was admitted Sept. 1901 in feeble health.
She was always crying and bemoaning her fate and very miserable. At times it was with difficulty that she could be persuaded to take her food. For some two or three weeks past she has been purged which seemed to weaken [her] and necessitated her being kept in bed. Two days ago she became markedly weaker. She has been in the infirmary ward since admission.
We await the order for burial.
Yours obediently,.
W. L. Cleland.
City Watch House.
Adelaide.
July 27th 1904.
To Dr. Ramsay Smith Esq.
City Coroner.
Adelaide

This patient was admitted Sept. 1901 in feeble health. She has been in the Infirmary Ward since admission.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your Obedient Servant,

Research Notes

There is some evidence that Rosa Gardner married Charles Bufton on the 9th December 1874 in Shrewsbury.[15][16][17][18]

Her father's will in 1878, which I have not sighted, is said to mention a Rosa Bufton and her husband Charles. If this is the case, Charles needs to be out of the picture by the time she marries Edwin in 1881 - and she marries with her maiden name.
