Research notes

Everything I see shows Mary Jane maiden name Gardner born in GA. the parents everyone shows for her Are Alice Barnes and John Hartley but that is not possible if her maiden name is Gardner. She was about 18 when married and it looks like John died at 37 so mother Alice could have remarried but Mary's maiden name would then be Hartley.
