George was born in 1809 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.[1]
George made two voyages as a boy and teenager in his father’s ships before taking command of the Mariner of Nantucket in 1836 at the age of 27. He subsequently commanded the Nantucket (1841-45) and the Narragansett (1855-60) before retiring from the sea and becoming a railroad agent in New York state.[2][3]
He passed away in 1896 in Concord, Massachusetts at age 87.[5] He was buried in the New North Cemetery, Nantucket, Nantucket County, Massachusetts Plot: TT-3. [6]
