In 1820, emigrated with his parents from Scotland to Chateauguay County, Quebec .
Later on he married Elizabeth Wight and bought a farm for himself in Beauharnois, PQ, where he resided until 1881 when he purchased the Gray's Creek Farm and moved to the other side of the St. Lawrence River.

In 1904, after his death, his son-in-law Nathan Copeland purchased Gray's Creek Farm from his eldest son.
