Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Malvina Gardner is a part of US Black heritage.

Malvina Gardner was born a slave before 1823, probably in Sumner County, Tennessee where she was enslaved by Puss (Gardner) Mooney before being bought by D. B. Smith of the same county. She was kidnapped by a Native American named Buck of the Cumberland Mountains in the Sumner County, Tennessee area when she attempted to leave the Smith plantation to return to the Gardner plantation. The men of the Gardner plantation - both Black and white, were able to retrieve her from the Native Americans only after she was pregnant with Buck's child. She was about thirteen years old. Puss Gardner bought her back from the Smith plantation. Her son Joseph went with Puss Gardner when she married to a Mr. Mooney to join their household as a slave.[1]

Living Amongst Native Americans

She lived for almost a year in the teepe with Buck and during that time learned much about Indian habits.[1]
