Zillah Miriam Gardner was born on April 19, 1844 in Wormley, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom. Her parents were William Gardner and Martha Harknett. Zillah was baptised on 29 May 1844 in Wormley, Hertford, England.^[1]

She married William Phipps. Her marriage was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1868 in the Ware district of Hertfordshire, England.^[2] Together they had at least 1 child, William Phipps

In the 1881 England census, Zillah was 36 years old and living with her husband and 9 children at their home on West End Green in Wormley, Hertfordshire, England. She was employed as a poultry dealer.^[3]

In the 1891 census, Zilla was 46 years old and living with her husband and 10 children at their home in Wormley, Wormley, Hertfordshire, England. Her husband was a woodman.^[4]

By 1911 Zillah was a widow. She lived in daughter Harriet and her husband. Also living with them were two of her adult children, Nelson (42) and Eli (29). They lived in Wormley, West End, Broxbourne, Herts, England.^[5]

Research Notes

• her birth name is unique and there is only one child with the name born during a 4 year period and that child's mother's maiden name was Allen, not Harknett. Some questions to consider:
  • Was her mother widowed before marrying her father, hence the name Harknett on her marriage certificate?
  • Is this possibly a conflated family tree? (two or more families with parents who have the same first names, combined together into one tree)
• Of note, there were no children at all born with that combination (last name Gardner or Gardener, and Mother's Maiden Name "Harknett") even with the "similar sounding names" option chosen between the years of 1844-1857
• even with the unusual first name, her record should come up in the registration district of "Ware", the birth location listed on all of her census records, and the only children born in Ware with the last name Gardener or Gardner were born with the Mother's Maiden Name "Anderson" and none of the first names match
