He was born on 30 Oct 1811 in County Tipperary, Ireland. [1]
As a child he immigrated with his family on the ship "Sir George Osborn" to South Africa. [2] His father, Edward Gardner, was a leader of the 1820 settlers in Gardner's Party. [1]
When Hezekiah was 15, for a quintrent of £3, he was granted a 2796 Morgan of land to the West of the Bushmans River. It was described as mostly thick, worthless Bush. No slave labour was to be used on this land. He named his farm Harvest Vale.(from the booklet...Tipperary to Harvest Vale)
