Research Notes

Marriage

There are three sources that provide information about the marriage of Adam Harman and Anna Gardner:
  1. Part II Chapter IX Page 123 of John Newton Harman's "Harman genealogy (southern branch) with biographical sketches, 1700-1924" indicates that Adam and Anna were married on 31 December 1787[1].
  2. There is a Virginia marriage bond, dated 24 December 1787, for Adam and Anna's marriage[2]. Note that the image attached to the associated FamilySearch record describes the marriage bond, but the next image is a note from Adam's father, Henry Harman, approving of the marriage bond.
  3. Finally, there is also an entry in the Marriage Register for Montgomery County, Virginia, for the marriage of Adam Harman and Anna Gardner[3]. This entry is transcribed from other sources, but indicates the bond date of 24 December 1787 and notes the parents of Adam and Anna:
    • Adam - father was Henry Harman.
    • Anna - mother was Susanna Gardner and her guardian (father?) was Henson Gardner.

Possible Conflation

On 2 February 2023 this profile indicated that Anna's parents were Martin Gardner and Sarah Bryan. The Marriage Register for Montgomery County, Virginia, however, indicates that Anna Gardner's mother was named Susanna and her guardian, possibly father, was Henson Gardner[3]. It is not clear whether the Anna Gardner whose parents were Martin and Sarah is the same person as the Anna Gardner who married Adam Harman.
