Clara D Gardner, one of five daughters born to John Shaver Gardner and Martha Ann Beach, was born in 1866 in Rensselaer County, New York. She married Charles Robert Gill in 1887 in Connecticut. Like his father, Charles was a medical physician and surgeon.
The couple went on to have seven children: four sons and three daughters. Clara's mother-in-law was from Cuba and eventually Clara and Charles went to Cuba, where their last two sons, Beach and Abram, were born.
