From Lois Hinson to her children.

WILLIAM ARTHUR GARDNER married Louise Alice Beaver the daughter of Aaron and Margaret Allen Beaver. Aaron and Margaret were both born in Sheffield, England, where he owned a sport shop and she made white kid leather boxing gloves by hand, under the regulation rules of the Marquis of Queensberry. "Grandma" Gardner (his daughter) used to say he was a very handsome man--very tall. They came to America in the 1870s to Lawrence. Massachusetts, to work for Bessemer Steel. He was offered a partnership in the company, but became seriously ill with asthma and died. She was left with several very small children and she had a stroke and was an invalid for the rest of her life. The children were reared with the help of ladies from St. John Episcopal Church.
