William was born in 1856. He was the son of Sterling Gardner and Lucinda Hightower. He passed away in 1934.

At the time of the 1870 US Census, head of household Sterling C. Gardner (age 38, born in Georgia) was working as a Farm Laborer and living on an estate worth $400 in Mississippi, United States with his wife, Lucinda A. Gardner (age 36, born in Georgia), and five children: John C. Gardner (age 16, born in Georgia), William H. Gardner (age 14, born in Georgia), Sterling S. Gardner (age 12, born in Georgia), Jessie B. Gardner (age 3, born in Georgia), and an African-American young girl Farm Laborer, Celah Gardner (age 17, born in Georgia).
