Sarah was born in 1850. She is the daughter of Samuel Gardner and Martha Goggans.
At the time of the 1870 US Census, head of household Saml B. Gardner (age 40, born in Georgia) was working as a Farmer and living in Mississippi, United States, with his wife, Martha W. Gardner (age 40, born in Georgia), and three Gardner children: Sarah E. Gardner (age 19, born in Georgia), Mary C. Gardner (age 17, born in Mississippi), and Frederick M. Gardner (age 8, born in Mississippi). Also living with the family were James M. Johnson (age 23, born in Georgia), Martha McCurry (age 18, born in Mississippi), and Benjamin McCurry (age 15, born in Mississippi). [1]
