Samuel Gardner, the son of Henry and Lucy Gardner, was born on February 3, 1740-1?. It is likely that he was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, as a birth record exists there, although his birth is also recorded in the records of Woburn, Massachusetts.

On August 9, 1769, Samuel, "of Woburn," married in Concord, Massachusetts, Dorothy Miles, of Concord. "Samuel Gardner, of Charlestown," was admitted as a member of Woburn First Church, April 5, 1770. His wife Dorothy died on February 11, 1787, at the age of 43.

Samuel was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. He served as a Private in Capt. Isaac Tuckerman's Company, Col. Ebenezer Francis' Regiment, of Massachusetts in 1776 ; and served as Guard at Boston from October 1, 1779, to January 11, 1780, in Capt. Caleb Champney's Company, Major Nathaniel Heath's Regiment.

Samuel Gardner died in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on May 6, 1790, at the age of 50. On May 8, he was buried at the First Burial Ground in Woburn, Massachusetts. His gravestone has probably been destroyed since William Cutter's 1866 cemetery survey, but the text has been preserved and may have appeared thus:
