Edward was born in 1835. He was the son of Edward Gardner and second wife Elizabeth Morris. He was first enumerated in the 1850 household of his step-father J. L. Crafford.
He was married 3 May 1858 to Harriett A. Wolf. No children were born of their marriage. He enlisted 16 December 1861 at Camp King, Kentucky as a Private and served in Company G of the 23rd Kentucky Infantry, attaining the rank of Corporal prior to his discharge 16 November 1865 at Victoria, Texas.
Edward appears to have been somewhat of a loner. In 1888, he filed for a disability pension in Kentucky from his Civil War service. He did not remarry and, without a family of his own, resided with his nephew Ed Blackburn for the last 24 years of his life. He passed away in Lawrenceburg, Indiana in 1921.
