John Gardiner of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, clothworker (will 1506),[1] was born about est. 1470.

His son Stephen Gardiner,[2] (b. c. 1495 - d. 12 Nov 1555), was Bishop of Winchester during the reigns of Henry VIII, c. 1531 - 51 and Mary I, c. 1553 - 55; and also served as Lord Chancellor from 1553 to 55. [1]
