Biography

Kent (historic flag)
Robert Gardner was born in Aldington, Kent, England.

Robert Gardner was born in Aldington, Kent, England about 1811. He was christened 17 Feb 1811 at Aldington. He was the son of Stephen Gardner and Mary[1]

Robert married Ann Crothall in Aldington, Kent, England in 1833[2][3]

In the 1841 Census of England and Wales taken on 6 Jun 1841, Robert is living in Church Street Court Lodge, Aldington, Kent, England with wife Ann and children Mary, 8, Stephen, 2 and infant Ann. His occupation is listed as Labourer.[4]

Ann and Robert immigrated to Australia on the ship the Lalla Rookh from Gravesend as Bounty Immigrants and arrived in Sydney on 26 December 1841.[5] On the immigration record, Robert is listed as a Farmer and Ann a Farm Servant. They arrived with children Mary (8), Stephen (3) and Ann (7 months). Robert is listed as being able to both read and write but Ann cannot read or write.

Robert and Ann settled to farming at Nowra Hill on Currambene Creek in the Shoalhaven area of New South Wales and had 7 more children in the colony.

He was reported to have paid £390 in 1861 for 78 acres in the Shoalhaven before 1861, so likely to have found success after arriving in the colony.[6]

Robert died on 26 October 1892, aged 81 and is buried in the General Church of England Cemetery, Nowra with his wife Ann.[7] Probate was granted to son John, also a farmer at Nowra Hill.
